From the Pastor’s Heart

  1. days are full of starts and stops and in-betweens. We move from bed to coffee pot, from family to appointments, from hello to goodbye, from place to place…. The pattern of our days spills over to shape our weeks and leave us with lives full of coming and going and transitions. Rarely are we still. Rarely do things remain the same. Change, as they say,

is about the only constant. Or is it?

Author Joan Chittister points to a different answer in her book, Wisdom Distilled from the Daily, when she writes of statio. Statio comes from the Greek word stasis, which means “to stand still." Rooted in the Benedictine monastic community, Statio is the practice of stopping outside the chapel door for a few minutes before entering for worship. Chittister writes,

The practice of statio is meant to center us and make us conscious of what we're about to do and make us present to God who is always present to us. Statio is the

desire to do consciously what I might otherwise do mechanically. Statio is the virtue of presence.

  1. goes on to say that it is not restricted to monastery use. We can actually practice it at any time of transition. It makes us more mindful of what is happening around us and draws us into God’s presence. It can be as simple as when you leave your house in the morning, you pause on the threshold of the doorway and your day and invite God to go with you and to open your eyes to his presence.

Or statio can happen in the middle

  1. your day, when you’re stuck in unavoidable delays, waiting for appointments that start late, or sitting at long traffic lights or carpool lane. Instead seeing them as wasted time, they can be a transition space and an invitation to stop and breathe, to remember God’s presence with us, and to invite God to guide us as we go to the next thing on our schedule. Any in-between moment can become a portal to grace if we stop, stand still, and remember that we stand in the presence God.

  1. we live days full of transitions. As a congregation we are also in a time of transition. Last week we announced that the Bishop has reappointed me to serve FUMC, Lafayette and Kaplan UMC beginning July 1. The Conference has also realigned the charge so that beginning July 1, we will be yoked with FUMC, Mansfield, and Rev. Joseph Guo will serve both churches as pastor. Joseph is a man of strong faith and witness, and I feel you will be blessed by his leadership. Bethel UMC will be on a charge by themselves, and Rev. Sam Wheless will be their pastor. That’s a lot of change, and there will be decisions that have to be made about things like worship times and office hours. You will hear more about that in the coming weeks. For now, I ask that you hold each of the congregations involved and our leadership in your prayers. I am always amazed by the way God can work in the midst of big changes when we keep our focus on him.

  1. this reminds me of the creation story in the first chapter of Genesis: “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” In the beginning … in that transition time between void and life, between formless and empty and abundant and full … there was God. And God hovered. I imagine the chaos quivering and contorting and roiling those deep waters. But God is still, and unconcerned that the waters might rise up and overtake. How could they, after all? Then God spoke, and the waters stilled and parted. Beauty, order, and abundance emerged.

I believe that God is with us in times of transition, hovering over the chaos of our lives, ready to again create abundant beauty and bring forth order. And I believe God invites us to hover with him, to be still in God’s presence and watch what God creates next!

So let us stop for a moment, breathe out a prayer for these transitions ahead, and step into a portal of grace.
